Defective & Recalled Tires

A tire is (referred to as) "defective" when a "design defect" or "manufacturing defect" has been identified in the tire. Driving on a tire with a known defect can lead to "tire failure" that often results in catastrophic injuries or even death.

Defective tires are recalled by the government (regulator) or manufacturer, however, tens of millions of tires that have a history of "tire failure" with known defects, that have been proven to be defective -have NOT been recalled and most will never be recalled.

Vehicle owners should be aware if they are driving on defective or recalled tires, expired tires, aged tires, or if their tires are under investigation for safety issues by federal regulators. Tirefax encourages vehicle owners to get ahead of potential "tire failures" caused by defective, expired or other dangerous tires by getting all the facts about your tires from Tirefax!

TIN# (Tire Identification Number)

The DOT number on a tire is often referred to as the TIN ("Tire Identification Number") and starts with the letters "DOT" indicating the tire meets all Federal standards by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The (alpha/numeric digits) that follow (DOT) will include a two/three digit (plant code); The "plant code" identifies the (city, state, country) of the plant and manufacturer. The "date code" is a four digit code and is important since it provides the "date of manufacture" (week and year) for the tire. The first two (digits) represent the "week of manufacture" (e.g. 28 is the 28th week), and the last two digits represent the "year of manufacture" (e.g. 21 is 2021). Therefore, 2821 represents the 28th week of 2021. Additional codes or markings are placed on the tire at the discretion of the manufacturer. This TIN or DOT code is referred to when vehicle owners and manufacturers if a tire is found to be "defective" and is the subject of a recall.
